The Sri Lankan capital of Colombo is situated on the west coast of Sri Lanka, almost near the middle of the island. It is ideally situated to visiting the rest of the country. Practically any beach in Sri Lanka is accessible and within a day’s drive or train ride from Colombo. The country itself has a length measured north to south of 440 kilometers and an east-west width measured at 220 kilometers. Some of the most famous Sri Lankan beaches include Negombo, Mount Lavinia and Kalutara in the west coast. Going around the country is easiest by riding the trains. The train systems are quite extensive and have a regular schedule. Although driving around by car is also possible, there are a lot more to see of the people when riding the train. It is a cheap mode of transport and very reliable. Within the cities and towns can be found taxis and tuktuks or motorcycle powered tricycles. The locals use this mode of transport for short distances or within the town or city.
Tea is one of the things which the country is well-known for. Introduced by the British, Sri Lankan tea is considered as one of the best tasting in the world. They are the world’s third largest exporter of tea. Although well-known as an agricultural country due to its key export Sri Lanka has a lot more to offer. It has a thriving gem stone industry. It is possible to buy good quality gems at a cheap price. Sri Lankan gems include sapphires (blue, orange, pink and star sapphires), rubies, garnets, moonstones, aquamarines and topazes.
