Sri Lanka is a an ideal tourist destination for those who like the sun, rural idyll, and a no-pressure vacation. Located in the Indian Ocean on the southeast tip of India, Sri Lanka is an island nation which has a long and rich history as well as a very diverse culture.


For one, the country has a rich history or more than 3,000 years. It was mentioned in the Ramayana, and has had a distinct heritage of more than 3,000 years. There are a lot of World Heritage site travel destinations in Sri Lanka. There are also a seemingly endless array of ancient ruins. The country is composed of various ethnic groups including Sri Lankan Tamils, Indian Tamil, Sinhalese, Burghers, Sri Lanka Moor. It has been conquered and occupied by Dutch and English colonists as well.


Some of the more popular heritage sites travel destinations in Sri Lanka are Anuradapura (from the Ancient Kingdom), Sigiraya (a fortress of the Ancient Kingdom), Polonnaruwa (Ancient Kingdom), Galle (an ancient fortress), Yapahuwa (an ancient fortress and former ancient capital) and Dambulla (a rock cave temple). At Maligawila can be found an ancient temple with the largest statue of Buddha in Sri Lanka. Kandy is a the old capital which was formerly part of the Ancient Kingdom and where a tooth relic can be found.


The Sri Lankan capital of Colombo is situated on the west coast of Sri Lanka, almost near the middle of the island. It is ideally situated to visiting the rest of the country. Practically any beach in Sri Lanka is accessible and within a day’s drive or train ride from Colombo. The country itself has a length measured north to south of 440 kilometers and an east-west width measured at 220 kilometers. Some of the most famous Sri Lankan beaches include Negombo, Mount Lavinia and Kalutara in the west coast. On the south coast can be located the beaches of Bentota, Ambalangoda, Hikkaduwa, Roomassala, Unawatuna, Weligama, Mirissa, Matara, Tangalle. The beaches of Pasikudah and Arugam Bay can be found on the east coast. Trincomalee, Nilaveli and Uppuveli can be found on the north coast.


Going around the country is easiest by riding the trains. The train systems are quite extensive and have a regular schedule. Although driving around by car is also possible, there are a lot more to see of the people when riding the train. It is a cheap mode of transport and very reliable. Within the cities and towns can be found taxis and tuktuks or motorcycle powered tricycles. The locals use this mode of transport for short distances or within the town or city.


Tea is one of the things which the country is well-known for. Introduced by the British, Sri Lankan tea is considered as one of the best tasting in the world. They are the world’s third largest exporter of tea. Although well-known as an agricultural country due to its key export Sri Lanka has a lot more to offer. It has a thriving gem stone industry. It is possible to buy good quality gems at a cheap price. Sri Lankan gems include sapphires (blue, orange, pink and star sapphires), rubies, garnets, moonstones, aquamarines and topazes.
