Golf
|
A
legacy from the British colonial period, golf in Sri
Lanka has many nostalgic links to this era. Visitors
have a choice of three excellent courses, situated in
three different climatic zones ....... almost as if
one were to be putting in three different countries
!
The Royal Golf Club, situated within the suburbs of
the capital city of Colombo, was established in 1879
and is one of the oldest in the world. The well maintained
18-hole course is 5770 yds. in length, with broad tree-lined
fairways.
At a mean elevation of 2000 mt., in the cool, scenic
hill resort of Nuwara Eliya, is a 18-hole beautiful
golf course, acknowledged as Asia"s best. This
well maintained course is 6250 yds. long .
The newest addition to the island’s golf assets,
is the Victoria golf course at Rajawella, a suburb of
the hill capital Kandy. Measuring 6879 yds. at full
championship length, the course has a fine undulating
terrain, over which the holes are routed.
Though the programme is planned primarily for Golf,
a City Tour of Colombo, a visit to Kandy (a cultural
high-point) and a drive into the lush hill country (famous
for Ceylon tea plantations) is is recommended on your
tour. Thus, you can enjoy a very relaxed holiday, while
experiencing the challenge of playing golf.

Rugby
|
|
Rugby is said
to be a game for ruffians, played by gentlemen. This however,
can fall by the wayside in a heated scrum or tackle, when
player's skill, stamina and physical ability are put to
the test.
This sport is popular in Sri Lanka, among schools and
local club sides. There are a few rugby clubs spread around
the country, having their own grounds. The rugby Season
is from April to August, in both School and Clubs, and
Champions are selected on a league basis.
The Singer Sri Lanka Rugby sevens tournament, which was
held in Kandy in 1999, during August and September, was
the first of it’s kind to be held for in Asia. Ten
international teams from Japan, Chinese Taipei, Korea,
China, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, India
and Sri Lanka participated, with Korea emerging as the
Champions. Organizers confirm that this Tournament will
be an annual international event.
