Climate
Year round tropical (warm and humid) temperatures in costal regions–Colombo averages 27 C. cooler in the hills with Kandy averaging with 20 C and Nuwara Eliya down to 16 C. monsoon rains are around May/June on the south-west coast and in December on the north-east coast.
Language
Sinhalese and Tamil official languages. English widely spoken and understood.
Religion
Buddhist with Hindu, Christian and Muslim minorities.
Dress
Casual cotton clothing and lightweight shoes and sandals are best. Sweater for the hill country where evenings can get quite chilly. Modest attire for visiting places of religious worship. Hats and shoes not allowed inside temples – pair of socks is recommended.

Vaccinations and protection
Nothing compulsory at present, however it is advisable to take protection against malaria.

Water
It is not always safe to drink the water from the tap. We recommended that you consume bottled water at all the times.
Voltage
230v-240v A.C. The local plugs and sockets are of the 3 pin round type.
Banks
All banks are open from 09.00 to 13.00 or 15.00 hrs, Monday to Friday, except holidays. Some banks are open on Saturday and also have an evening service. Airport banks open 24 hours every day. Currency: Sri Lanka Rupee.

Shopping
Sri Lanka is famed for its precious stones. However these purchases are best made from a reputable dealer or shop with fixed prices. Amongst other items typically Sri Lanka are handicrafts; brass, copper and silver ware; lacquer ware, woodcarvings and batiks.
