Sri
Lanka is ideally endowed for water-based sports, adventure,
and other land-based leisure activity.
Combined with well-developed and professional water-sports
facilities and infrastructure, these assets offer excellent
scope for all varieties of aqua activities. They include
scuba-diving, snorkeling, windsurfing, water-skiing, surfing,
sailing, speedboat, banana-boat, jet-scooter and tube
rides, river, river land lagoon boat cruises, deep-sea
and river fishing, canoeing and kayaking and white-water
and river-rafting. Prime water sports resorts and marinas
are located in the leading beach resorts around Negombo,
Mount Lavinia, Kalutara, Beruwela, Bentota, Hikkaduwa,
Weligama, Tangalle and Hambantota, on the western, southern
and southeastern coasts.
The range of land-based sport, adventure and special interest
activity, which Sri Lanka’s diverse topography and
varied bio-diversity of extraordinary richness offers,
is immense. The most accessible and popular wildlife land
areas are Yala, Uda Walawe, Horton Plains, Wasgomuwa,
and Randenigala, especially for elephant, sambur, leopard,
sloth bear, wild buffalo, many species of dear and monkey,
giant squirrel, civet, rusty spotted and fishing cat,
pangolin and jackal, many endemic bird and butterfly species
and vegetation. Other major wilderness sites include Sinharaja
Rainforest, Knuckles Ranges, Adam’s Peak Wilderness,
Hakgala natural reserve and Udawattekelle, the bird sanctuaries
of Bundala and Kalametiya and the Muturajawela tropical
wetlands.
With this asset base, a superb range of land-based leisure
activity options becomes possible. The list includes hiking,
trekking, nature trails, walking, mountain climbing, mountain
biking, paragliding and international (non-professional)
